Privacy Policy

How we collect, use, protect, and disclose personal information — as a licensed Utah private investigation agency, discretion is the foundation of everything we do.

Effective date: June 6, 2026

American Detective, LLC ("we," "us," or "our") is a licensed private investigation agency operating in the State of Utah. Protecting personal information is not just a legal obligation for us — discretion and confidentiality are the foundation of our profession. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, protect, and disclose personal information through our website, our client portal, and in the course of providing investigative services.

Who This Policy Covers

This policy applies to:

  • Visitors to our website
  • Prospective and current clients, including users of our secure client portal
  • Individuals whose information we collect in the course of lawful investigations

Information We Collect

From website visitors and prospective clients: when you submit our contact form or call us, we collect the information you choose to provide — such as your name, email address, phone number, and a description of your situation. We also collect limited technical information (browser type, pages visited) needed to operate and secure the site.

From clients: when you engage our services, we collect engagement and billing details, communications with your investigator, and the case materials we prepare for you. Portal sign-in uses your Google or Apple account; we receive only your name and email address — never your password.

In the course of investigations: as licensed investigators we lawfully collect information about subjects of investigations, which may include identities, locations, activities, photographs, and video. This information is collected only for legitimate investigative purposes permitted under Utah law and, where applicable, under federal laws such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act that govern access to regulated data sources.

How We Use Information

  • To respond to inquiries and provide a free, confidential consultation
  • To perform the investigative services our clients engage us for
  • To operate the secure client portal, share case materials, and send case communications
  • To invoice for services and maintain business records
  • To meet our legal, licensing, and insurance obligations

We do not sell personal information. We do not use your information for third-party advertising, and we do not share inquiry details with marketers — ever.

Confidentiality of Case Information

All case information is held in strict confidence. Access is limited to the licensed investigators and staff assigned to your matter, each of whom is bound by confidentiality obligations and the ethical standards of our profession. Case files, photographs, and video are stored in access-controlled, encrypted systems, and material is shared with a client only through their authenticated portal account or another secure method the client approves.

Please note that investigative files are business records of the agency. While we never disclose them voluntarily, we may be legally compelled to produce records in response to a valid subpoena, court order, or other lawful process. Where the law allows, we will notify the affected client before producing records.

When We Share Information

We share personal information only:

  • With service providers who host our website, store case files, and process email on our behalf, under contractual confidentiality obligations
  • With our client, in the form of reports and case materials for the matter they engaged us for
  • When required by law, such as a valid subpoena, court order, or licensing-authority audit
  • To protect the immediate safety of any person, where disclosure is necessary and lawful

Data Security

We protect personal information with industry-standard measures: encrypted storage and transmission, role-based access controls, authenticated portal access, and short-lived secure links for case files. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat the protection of your information with the same discretion we apply to every investigation.

Data Retention

We retain case files and business records for as long as required by Utah licensing requirements, our insurance obligations, and applicable statutes of limitation, after which records are securely destroyed. Website inquiry information that does not lead to an engagement is retained only as long as needed to respond and follow up.

Your Choices and Rights

You may contact us at any time to ask what contact information we hold about you, request a correction, or ask us to delete inquiry information that we are not legally required to keep. Information gathered in the course of an investigation is subject to our client confidentiality obligations and applicable law, and may not be available for review by the subject of the investigation.

Children's Privacy

Our website and services are directed to adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through our website.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date below reflects the latest revision; material changes will be posted on this page.
